Candle Extinguisher. Sadly, sometimes, those three little candles just won’t let you in. You may huff and you may puff, you may even call upon some assistance, but the house just won’t blow in. Worry not however as this playful ecard from Alistair Nicholls and George Grinling is a reminder that even if it doesn’t go to plan – heck, the whole cake might come crashing down – it is still your birthday.
Alistair Nicholls is an English animator and illustrator whose character led work is comic and captivating. He pairs a natural instinct for timing with an expert understanding of the awkward moment. The ideas he gravitates towards are off-the-wall yet relatable. In terms of bringing them to life, his primary medium is claymation. It’s a medium that has a special tangible quality that stands out in a world dominated by digital approaches to craft and art. It’s hard not to enjoy the work that Alistair creates. You get the impression that it’s as fun for him to make as it is for us to watch.
George Grinling’s music evokes a contemporary orchestral sound. It’s avant-garde and fun, whilst maintaining a nostalgic texture. His sound is fundamentally a collage of the music that has influenced him throughout his life. From classical and pop, to electronic and jazz. He started writing music at a young age, but for his ambition to really flourish he dedicated a chunk of his life to teaching himself the fundamentals of composition, before continuing his studies as a protégé under some prominent composers in London. Simultaneously George found success in his electronic music explorations as part of THOOL, a band that gives him a parallel vocation, where he experiments with off-beat, off-the-wall compositional soundscapes.
