Polar Bear. This well-prepared polar bear is ready to keep her furry coat snow-free. But this snowstorm seems determined to catch her out. This wonderfully playful ecard was created by claymation animator Alistair Nicholls and composer Ben Bavonese.
Alistair Nicholls is an English animator and illustrator whose character led work is comic and captivating. He pairs a natural instinct for timing with a subtle appreciation of the awkward moment. His ideas are off-the-wall yet relatable. In terms of bringing them to life, his primary medium is claymation. It’s a medium that has a special tangible quality that stands out in a world dominated by digital approaches to craft and art. It’s hard not to enjoy the work that Alistair creates. You get the impression that it’s as fun for him to make as it is for us to watch.
Ben Bavonese was encouraged by his twin brother, Noah, who works at the prestigious animation studio Giant Ant, to pursue a life in sound design. His musical grounding comes from spending years transcribing the masters of jazz by ear. He took the same approach sound design, learning by doing, emulating his favourite artists. Alongside his compositions for animation, he is in a jazz and R&B band in Chicago. That energy feeds into his compositions, which are fresh, impeccably produced, and make use of well chosen samples combined with layered melodics.
